While learning a profession such as dental medicine, practice is an integral part of adequate training. In certain cases, however, this type of training differs and can, according to individual goals and perceptions, take an original shape to say the least. In the case of four students at the Université de Montréal, this originality took the form of a dental clinic for street youths aged 14 to 25. In a desire to offer free preventive and curative dental care in their own personal environment, the group of students, in order to heighten awareness, first met their future customers in their milieu, that is to say in parks, on the streets, in community centres and at the CLSC des Faubourgs. A temporary clinic was then set up within the Clinique des jeunes de la rue of this same CLSC. After helping in the search for equipment and financial support as well as in the design and development of a promotional campaign, the students finally welcomed their first customers. Without a doubt, this project, based on empathy and solidarity, proved to be beneficial to all concerned.
