Quebec, more multiethnic than ever? You can say that again! With more and more students from all over the world pursuing their studies at universities in the province, it has become imperative that they be able to adapt to their new environment. At the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières a group of students took the bull by the horns by creating the Comité d’intégration international universitaire (CIIU). Welcoming students upon their arrival in the country, providing information on the services offered in the region and on campus, creating jobs and hosting integration activities are some of the CIIU’s actions. As well as promoting these resources for foreign students, the committee also organizes a cultural week in order to make the 49 nationalities present on the UQTR campus better known and thereby establish ties between the population and the newcomers. A constructive initiative which will certainly contribute to the multiethnic development of the Mauricie region.

Considered to be much more than a simple homework club by participating students, the Horizons project embraces the concept of an equality of chances in the school environment. Thus, thanks to the Horizons project and its founders, Samuel Vaillancourt, Joël Thibert and Geneviève Létourneau, three students at McGill University, and some thirty students from the Collège Jean-Eudes in the Rosemont district in Montreal were selected to be tutors for some thirty students at the Saint-Nom-de-Jésus elementary school in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Every Wednesday afternoon for an hour and a half tutors helped students to complete their homework. Tutors have developed a strong sense of responsibility while youngsters have acquired a positive attitude towards school and confidence in their skills. In fact, in the vision of the project's founders, all children have a right to succeed and this is the principle which Horizons defends. Thus, the project has enabled students with learning disabilities to obtain the helping hand they need to succeed.
