Dictée Éric-FournierCommitted to promoting the French language among teachers
In August 2007, five students in the faculty of education at UQÀM set up the Dictée Éric-Fournier, an innovative project aimed at helping teachers improve their knowledge of the French language and acquire a taste for perfecting their writing skills. Named in honour of Éric Fournier, a friend who died accidentally in early 2007, the dictation has the added advantage of being on the Web (www.dictee.ca), and thus offers users the chance to work and improve in total privacy. The site publishes a new dictation every week accompanied by detailed answers and benefits from the right to reproduce the content of the Antidote software to ensure reliable, top quality answers. The project members also host a kind of annual competition, which last year attracted more than 140 participants.

Through his determination and leadership, Séreyrath Srin, a linguistics graduate student at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) who is originally from Cambodia, chose to make the exodus of young people and the ageing population of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region his main battle horse. In turn a member of an event management committee and then its coordinator and vice-president and president of various associations, Séreyrath sees his involvement as simply his personal duty to the region that took him in. He re-established UQAC’s international students’ association, set up a multicultural festival, restructured the Corporation intégration Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, created a job day for newcomers and re-launched the activities of AIESEC-Chicoutimi, actions that were all aimed at making his region more attractive to young people and immigrants.
