Students as Literacy Tutors
In 1997 there were 1,300,000 illiterate people of all age groups in Québec. So a handful of students at the Université de Sherbrooke rolled up their sleeves and formed a literacy group. Working hand in hand with local organizations specializing in education, this group is in direct contact with people who have requested help with reading and writing. Since 1997, this literacy group's main activity has been to pair tutors with students. A literacy tutor meets a learner once or twice per week. 1999-2000 was the group's fourth year in operation and thirty more pairings are being planned.
