Dynamism, innovativeness, diversity and environmental relevance, these are all synonyms for Univert Laval, the only independent environmental group at the Université Laval. The organization depends upon the initiative of volunteers to diffuse and implement ecological thinking on campus. Univert Laval has a multitude of projects, including setting up free car pooling, a documentation centre, the construction of an environmental house as well as the promotion of recycling in the community. In October, the organization took a stand against the destruction of a wooded area on campus which was replaced by a dump for snow, taking advantage of the occasion to speak out for the wealth of the ecosystem on campus. Thanks to Univert Laval’s recycling program, over 10 additional tons of recyclable materials are now salvaged every month.

The students in Planning and Environmental Forestry at the Université Laval cherish the integrated management of our resources. Under the theme La forêt… ça change d’air!, they organized the Semaine des sciences forestières, a veritable forum on burning issues in the field of forestry such as environmental protection and biological diversity protection. The week-long forum was structured along two main lines: a series of colloquia and evening lectures, as well as a major exhibition, all aimed at promoting forestry activities and new ways of managing resources. Moreover, the Salon de la forêt exhibition, held at the Galeries de la Capitale shopping centre, brought together over 100 future professionals and attracted nearly 20,000 people interested in visiting the 50 stands.

In coming decades the peregrine falcons of Baldwin Mills in the Eastern Townships may owe a lot to a biology student from the Université du Québec à Rimouski. In fact, Denis Duteau's passion for these birds of prey has led him to become involved in heightening public awareness of the habitat of this species which, only a few years ago, was almost extinct in our region. For two years, Mr. Duteau has intervened at different levels. Firstly, he attended the meetings of the H. F. Baldwin park committee, he gave a lecture to local citizens, set up a stand to increase public awareness in different places and erected a sign on the subject of falcons on the park's main trail. Another of his important achievements is the founding of the Quebec chapter of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation. After participating in the launching of a study on the falcon's migratory route, he continued his concerted research and studies, taking advantage of the winter months to seek the financial support necessary to further promote public awareness.
