A BA student in Cultural Animation and Research at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Évelyne Boisvert-Beauregard has a thirst for culture and social commitment. In fact, while pursuing her studies, she was an activities leader at a community centre, a cultural leader for the Artiste à l’école program, a child care worker and a radio host. Full of creativity and leadership, she was an intern with Québec sans frontières in Bolivia in 1998 and a guide with Défi-Aventure Québec-Caraïbes in Cuba in 1999. This experience has confirmed her belief that social commitment through community development, heightening public awareness and cultural intervention are to be the driving forces behind her activities. She is currently in Peru where she will be able to complete her training as well as make the most of her personal resources in order to promote durable development.

With a degree from the Department of Medicine at McGill University, Astrid Christoffersen-Deb is a source of inspiration for her peers: she has a passion for issues regarding human rights and focuses much attention on socio-anthropological realities and women’s rights. Ms. Christoffersen-Deb pursues her studies with excellence while maintaining a high standard in the practice and teaching of the violin and swimming which, as a volunteer, she has now integrated into her university involvement. Firm humanitarian convictions and her commitment to the United Nations Student Association of McGill University and the Student Association for Medical Aid have led her to the presidency of committees linked to the UN as well as to undertake internships in Quebec regions and in countries where medical services are more scarce with the aim of setting up mobile medical units. Thanks to a Rhodes Scholarship, she will nourish her desire for a better world by studying philosophy, economics and politics.

The French writer Albert Camus said that true generosity towards the future consisted in giving everything to the present. Isabelle Lavoie has long understood this maxim and her commitment bears witness to it in every respect. A woman of heart, Isabelle Lavoie has, despite her young age, a very impressive cursus. Her concern for others and her profound desire to work towards building a more equitable society which respects the differences that distinguish people and cultures is characteristic of the nature of her commitments. Choir singing, stamp collecting, theatre, music, spirituality, sports, environment, international mutual aid, community commitment, Isabelle’s areas of interest and involvement are far-reaching and varied. Furthermore, she continues her activities while, at the same time, obtaining enviable academic grades. For Isabelle, study, extracurricular activities and social commitment go hand in hand and are the essential elements in a person’s balanced development.

Geneviève Beaumont-Frenette cares about her fellow citizens. She devotes her free time to children, sharing with them her thirst for life. For this singer and trombonist, it all began with the Scouts where, over the years, she went from being a young scout to a scout leader. She then furthered her leadership experience by participating in day camps, hosting Dungeons and Dragons activities and activities at a playground club for adolescents. Motivated by a desire to always do better, Geneviève has participated in projects abroad, including a trip to Ecuador for community assistance and an exchange trip to Germany. With an international Baccalaureate, Geneviève is currently a BA student in Political Science at the Université Laval. And her name appears on the honour roll of the Dean of the Social Sciences Faculty for the excellence of her academic file! She regards participating in student life as important as is demonstrated both in her volunteer work at the student café and her involvement in various committees.

Multidisciplinary is a euphemism when speaking of Vincent Bouchard, a BA student in Physics at the Université de Montréal. Firstly, his numerous rankings, scholarships and honorary mentions, including a recent Rhodes Scholarship, bear witness to his genius for the natural sciences. As for his social commitment, he is, among other things, a member of the general assembly of Camps de l'avenir, assistant director of the general executive of the Service de préparation à la vie movement and member of his university's Physics Departmental Assembly. Lauréat II in classical piano, he shares his gift by teaching. He is also a self-taught guitarist and accordion player, has taken drum lessons and makes the most of his musical and singing talents by playing in a band as well as playing for various organizations and telethons. Furthermore, Vincent assiduously practices several sports such as rock climbing, water-polo, basketball, badminton and golf. His career goal: to become a teacher as a way of seeking out his dream of the ultimate theory.

Michaël Pinard is directly involved and pulls up his sleeves every day in order to improve his world. A student in Chemical Engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke, Michaël has been deeply committed to and involved in mutual aid for a long time. Active in his community, he has participated in numerous charity collections for the underprivileged. When confronted with the proposed closing of the summer canteen, he even decided to take it over himself in order to save jobs and offer villagers a meeting place, thus contributing in his own way to stimulating community life. Student involvement has also held an important place in his activities. Initially the treasurer of the Association générale des étudiants en génie, he has now held the position of president three times. During these mandates, many improvements were made so that it could better serve its members. This born optimist will have completed his BA with brio by next December and hopes to become an engineer whose social conscience will have a positive influence on society.

Rachelle Dickinson is a woman with big projects and great determination. Excelling in her studies at McGill University, where she has completed a BA in Commerce in addition to two minors in Political Science and Environment, she has received honours from the Dean of her faculty. She finds time to play the violin, for sports and for volunteer work, in particular with soup kitchens. As well as her participation in UN debate simulations, where she has gained renown in positions concerning the economy and the environment, Rachelle has set up an incredible fund-raising campaign for McGill’s UNICEF Halloween drive. As a responsible citizen, her concern is that the choices and decisions made in economic and political spheres have a human face. Thus, her involvement in the UNICEF committee led her to the post of president. She is now moving into International Law, drawn towards the defence of human rights and, more specifically, those of children.

Adhering to a Socratic vision which defends misconduct as the product of ignorance, Marie-Hélène St-Hilaire has set herself the mission of transmitting knowledge. Be it with scientific popularization presentations or by heightening public awareness about environmental issues, Marie-Hélène makes it her duty to share her most prized possession: knowledge. This student in Psychology at the Université du Québec à Montréal, with a BA in Physical Education, has always had a passion for health, both psychological and physiological. Initially a summer camp counsellor for children with cancer, she has pursued her activities as a St-John Ambulance volunteer. Her interest in psychology has subsequently led her to become involved with the Youth in Motion organization as a counsellor for adolescents and also to act as coordinator for the Passages organization which gives shelter to homeless women. During her university studies, she received numerous scholarships for academic excellence.
