Created in 1985 by a group of students from the Université de Sherbrooke, the Fondation FORCE aimed to offer a real solution for the excessive financial insecurity that some students live with. It has been a happy initiative because, up to now, over 7,000 students at the Université de Sherbrooke have benefited, in one way or another, from the Fondation’s financial support. In 2000 alone, it awarded approximately $400,000 to over 1,000 students. Expanding its services over the years, the Fondation has established four support programs: the assistance loan, the study-work program, four types of bursaries and food assistance in order to help students who are in critical situations. Financed by a voluntary student contribution of $10 per term, the Fondation FORCE has thus been able to amass a capital of 2 million dollars, the interests of which are used to fund the aid programs. It can therefore pride itself for putting students’ money at the service of students.

In 1995, ten students from McGill University established the Student Association for Medical Aid (SAMA), an association with the mission of promoting humanitarian aid abroad. Until now, the group has undertaken six missions in Armenia, a country where the influx of over half a million refugees from Azerbaijan in 1988 brought about its share of health problems. In these circumstances, it is the multidisciplinary approach which has distinguished and crowned SAMA’s actions with success. In order to successfully carry out projects, which last an average of four to six weeks, the organization recruits its participants in several university departments. This versatility therefore enables it to provide the targeted regions with support that covers all aspects, be it social, medical or economic. Fortified by its success, SAMA intends to extend its activities over the next few years. Soon the students will be going to lend assistance to the inhabitants of Kenya and Senegal.
