Brewing alcohol-free beer without altering the taste was the ambitious goal that students in Chemical Engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke set for themselves when conceiving SherBroue. In fact, they believed so much in their project that, from the start, they chose to create the Coopérative de solidarité brassicole at the Université de Sherbrooke. The students then achieved an incredible feat by succeeding in designing a unique and functional food process based on industry specifications. After conducting a survey, the student brewers gave SherBroue the characteristics of a red ale. Taking advantage of the fact that their product was alcohol-free, the project founders, concerned about alcohol abuse, established a partnership with the Université de Sherbrooke Health Services and Éduc-Alcool in order to promote responsible alcohol consumption among young people. So far, over 80 students from different faculties have contributed to making this project a success.

The key to success is what the student organizers of the 25th edition of the Carrefour Emploi of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières had to offer. This annual event consists essentially of stimulating exchanges on job perspectives and current job market requirements in various fields. In an effort to introduce new ideas, the Carrefour Emploi 2001 made numerous major and significant innovations. In particular, the Carrefour widened its clientele by inviting the students of the Cégep de Trois-Rivières to participate in the event. The organizers also designed and established a Web site devoted in its entirety to the Carrefour Emploi and aimed at employers. Moreover, they designed and produced a 32-page newspaper with a circulation of 1,500 copies with the goal of helping and guiding the visiting students. With an almost non-existent outlay, the 25th edition made a profit of $7,000, twice as much as the previous year.

In 1999, with the firm intention of bringing together energy and new ideas for creating and developing businesses, five students established the Regroupement des étudiants entrepreneurs de l’Université Laval (RÉEL). By bringing students from different fields together as well as through networking activities, the RÉEL seeks to promote entrepreneurship and the emergence of new enterprises. The RÉEL, apparently the first student association to set itself the goal of creating contacts between entrepreneurs from different departments, also gives its members the opportunity of participating in the activities of the Quebec region’s socio-economic organizations. In its first year, the RÉEL succeeded in bringing together nearly 150 student members from a dozen departments. This newly-formed association can already depend upon the participation of some twenty collaborators who work with the association, as well as with various socio-economic organizations, towards developing its activities.
