Future physicians from the Université de Montréal decided to reflect on the current state of the Québec healthcare system. The reason motivating students to launch the project was a heightened awareness of the flagrant lack of information and involvement of future physicians. Becoming spur-of-the-moment journalists, the 25 students involved in the project launched a special edition of Le Pouls, a student newspaper, in February 2000. Le Pouls provided an analysis of the Québec healthcare system. The 36-page brief had an important impact, sparking the interest of the media, universities, hospitals and different organizations concerned by this emerging issue.

Project ÉPIPEM (medical students’ first aid prevention and intervention team) was established in September 1998. This was a very innovative project because it consisted of the first team of first-aid workers, made up of Laval University students, who were ready to participate in first-aid efforts throughout all kinds of events. The purpose behind the creation of ÉPIPEM was to offer a volunteer service to the community, promote efficient practices and the prevention of injuries in first-aid care, and allow medical students to gain experience in emergency medical care. Two years later, the team included 23 dynamic undergraduate members, each benefiting from rigorous training.

“Two Continents, One Project” is an initiative piloted by 12 very determined students attending Laval University (11 in medicine and 1 in philosophy). The project consisted of an international cooperation internship allowing the young people to travel to developing countries to offer medical care. Members of the summer 2000 project, whose mission led them to Honduras and Cameroon, worked very hard at developing the event with the assistance of members of the religious community of the Sisters of Jesus. The purpose of the project was to allow the students to perfect their medical training and participate in unique mutual aid and cooperation. The project generated positive spin-offs for both the targeted populations and participating students.
