Concern for innovation in communication methods and their desire to achieve a learning experience based on a project led students from the social communications department at the Université du Québec in Trois-Rivières to join efforts with high school students in the region. Together they undertook Project 2000. The purpose of the project was to heighten the awareness of the local Mauricie population regarding the social aspects of recycling. The team of students collected more than 39,000 recyclable containers. Then, with the help of 150 volunteers, a football field was used to reproduce a scale-size map of the world. The thousands of containers were placed inside each of the five continents on the map to illustrate issues and the need for recycling on a planetary scale.

In January 2000, more than a dozen students from the Université du Québec in Rimouski created the Comité étudiant de Rimouski pour l’environnement (CEDRE). This student committee on the environment was established because no group actively involved in environmental awareness issues actually existed. The mission of this non-profit organization is to heighten awareness and to foster environmentally sound behaviour among the university community and the general population in the Rimouski area. Not only did CEDRE members decide to tackle the promotion of environmental issues through action taken directly on campus, they also urged city of Rimouski government officials to introduce a Blue Box program.

In the near future, the Québec region will have a “green” or “healthy” house. This project, launched by an association known as Univert Laval, will be completed using the results of a competition organized among Laval university students attending the school of architecture. The Michael-John-Brophy house situated on campus and dating back to 1947 will be renovated and expanded, based on standards governing green construction techniques. Among other things, the project will provide proof that it is technically possible and economically feasible to renovate in an urban setting using environmentally sound materials and methods. After its renovation, the green house will serve to host theme activities and stage presentations.
