Close to 6,000 youngsters take part in activities organized by Folie Technique, an initiative of a student group at the École Polytechnique de Montréal. During “Science Day,” participants aged 9 to 15 make contact with the world of science. If a youngster is enthralled, he or she can apply to attend the Folie Technique day camp and learn much more about the world of science. In addition, Folie Technique offers 150 workshops annually in elementary and high schools in the Montréal region. In its 10 years of existence, the organization can safely state that it has generated interest in science in a number of young people, some of whom became career scientists.

Sparking interest in reading among underprivileged preschoolers is not easy. The process was made even harder by the fact that the team of students enrolled in the preschool and elementary school teaching program at the university of Sherbrooke had no model to help them in developing their project. Regardless of the fact, the four students organized a fundraiser to buy books and educational material. A book collection activity was also scheduled. Then the students planned reading sessions. Members of the Lire pour grandir group structured interactive reading sessions with the children. It worked! The children asked for more. Plans to establish another group of volunteer students are now in the making.

In the past, major universal exhibitions presented the latest breakthroughs in the arts, science and technology worldwide. Why not apply the concept to student achievements? Thanks to a group of students from Laval University, the concept is now reality. On March 29 and 30, 2000 Laval University’s confederation of student associations (CADEUL) presented La Vitrine étudiante, an on-campus activity showcasing 120 achievements by 350 students enrolled in 11 different faculties. This première attracted 2,500 visitors and much praise. In addition, setting up the La Vitrine étudiante allowed a number of budding organizers to gain hands-on experience in the completion of a hypothetical project.
