Founded in 1993, PAPIRUS (Production Autonome de Papier Ingénieusement Recyclé à Université de Sherbrooke), or 'Autonomous Production of Cleverly Recycled Paper at the Université de Sherbrooke', is made up of successive classes of students from the Engineering Faculty who hand down the same project over successive semesters: building a machine that will make it possible to recycle the paper waste of a medium-sized business. Although the machine could be described as a mini-recycler, at a length of six meters, width of two meters and height of two meters, it is still rather imposing. The main components of the machine are now completed. The next teams to work on the project will have to automate the mini-recycler and find ways to reduce, if not eliminate the use of chemical products.

Marie-Josée Delisle, at the Université du Québec in the Outaouais, has hit on an innovative concept for a social message advertisement that matches her own concern for the environment. Since water is just as essential to the environment as blood is to the body, she has created an advertisement campaign that promotes the intelligent use of drinking water. While there may not be much of anything new and unusual about making the population aware of the importance of saving on natural resources, the strategy and medium used here are something else. Her strategy involves the bathroom. Her medium is ceramic. These are two new elements for a hitherto unexplored advertising concept.

Barely a year after its creation, the Université de Montréal's Comité action environnement (Environment Action Committee), can be proud of its numerous achievements. The members of this committee, which was founded in September 1998 by students at the Faculté d'aménagement, have two goals: to use resources efficiently at the faculty, making proper waste-management there a possibility that is both realistic and readily put into practice, and to promote their colleagues' awareness of the importance of natural and human environments in a creative workplace. Measures taken to reach these goals include installing two recycling pick-up points, running a multi-purpose resource centre, organizing activities and hosting lunchtime talks. Many more projects are still to come.
