Cleaning, repairing and pulling teeth, and removing tartar! That's what five students had to do for five weeks, all in Spanish. While in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 1998, they offered free dental care to the population. Throughout their stay, these students from the Université Laval Faculty of Dentistry were overwhelmed with work. But quite apart from the difficult working conditions - the terrible heat, the blazing sun, the frequent lack of electricity and running water - they came back delighted with their stay abroad. The Faculty was prompted by this highly instructive experience to create a new optional course entitled Stage international (International Practicum). Eleven more students will be trying it out in the summer of 1999.

Getting a group of future health-care workers together in one place, hosting talks and discussions with them, getting them involved in work-shops and giving them a chance to put their heads together. Students at the Université de Montréal met these goals at the first student symposium on interdisciplinarity, which was a thorough success. This event on March 24 brought together some 350 students from ten programs in the health care field. And what is interdisciplinarity? A concept implying broad-based cooperation among health professionals, shared responsibility for the health of the patient, and optimal range for the treatment given by each professional. It. implies synergy. A second, more elaborate symposium is in the works for 2000.

The multimedia are coming into their own! Technology now makes it possible to condense tons of information which used to take up acres of storage. Students at Université Laval Faculty of Medicine can now see for themselves the benefits of the multimedia thanks to a CD-ROM for individual study in cardiology. The course on the cardiovascular system will never be the same thanks to this tool. Two third-year students have condensed and illustrated the subject matter of the course and put it on a CD-ROM along with interactive material that allows the student to check for retention. Course in ophthalmology and pneumonology will also soon be illustrated on CD-ROMs for students.
