Award recipients and finalists
Susanne Bate is a very determined young woman whose academic and professional career are all laid out before her. After doing her post-secondary studies in British Columbia she went into Anthropology and Religion at Concordia University. She is concerned with the well-being of the communities around her, and wishes to become a resource person in her area of expertise, which is adopting First Nations people. To meet these goals, she is devoting all of her energy to developing her skills in this field and her knowledge of it. When her training at Concordia is complete, she plans to get a B.A. in social work at McGill University and then to pursue studies in First Nations Peoples in Alberta.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesFrom the time she entered university, Wendy Lai has kept herself intensely involved in many areas. First she registered in biochemistry, while simultaneously active in a variety of social projects, showing special commitment to feminist and anti-racist causes. She contributed to the development of Girlspace, which seeks to promote spontaneous exchanges with adolescent girls of diverse backgrounds. She has been a volunteer for Walksafe McGill, and coordinated the Women of Colour Collective for two years. After so many varied experiences, Wendy chose to re-direct her studies to medicine, which will allow her to commit herself all the more deeply to people in need.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesMarlène Grenon has been dreaming for some years now of the day when she will take part in a space mission. Realizing the level of excellence required to fulfill such an ambition, she performed brilliantly at the college diploma level in Pure and Applied Science before immersing herself in Medicine, which she is now completing at McGill University. She already holds a diploma in Space Studies from the International Space University. She has taken part in several research projects in the field of space medicine and has coordinated talks on the subject. Marlène speaks five languages and holds a black belt in Judo, and plays violin and piano. She intends to pursue further studies in heart surgery and then take off to explore space.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesStéphanie Arsenault received her college diploma in Humanitites specializing in international development at the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, and then started a degree in social work at the Université du Québec in Montreal. She was a research auxiliary in the fields of immigration and mental health, after which she became involved in humanitarian projects in Honduras and Nicaragua. Originally from the Gaspésie area, she is committed to humanitarian aid and to causes with positive social impact. She sees herself today as being simply a defender of the society of tomorrow, such that all may be entitled, as she puts it, to a life full of happiness.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesMarcia Gibson wants to be a manager. Her skills and personality are indeed perfect for the field. She did her college studies in Ontario and is currently completing a B.A. in social work at McGill University. Ms. Gibson has done a great deal of volunteer work and been active in various causes. Moreover, she is the author of a training manual for support groups at the Sexual Assault Centre of the McGill’s Students’ Society, where she has done coordination work. She feels that management will allow her to make the best of her knowledge, training, and skills.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesElsa Beaulieu studied in both Health Sciences and Literature and Philosophy at the Collège de Maisonneuve in Montreal. She then registered for a degree program in Outdoorsmanship and Adventure Tourism at the Université du Québec in Chicoutimi, and soon attracted attention for being venturesome indeed, leading rafting excursions in Thailand. She has also been a university research assistant. Elsa is a volunteer at UQAC's Outdoors Club, and is actively involved in student committees. Her current projects include a Master's in regional development. This topic will allow her to broach issues concerning the First Nations peoples of Quebec, an interest to which she is passionately devoted.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesFrancis Gagnon found himself furiously juggling ideas, ideals, and mad-cap schedules practically from the moment he registered in Communications at the Université de Montréal. The following year he started a degree at Université Laval with a Major in Political Science. Francis devoted himself to getting various projects off the ground on campus. Among other things, he was involved in creating a newspaper, got a political debate group going, and set up a mentor system for new Political Science students. He was named Outstanding Male Person of the Year in the Political Science department in 1998, and was awarded the Jean-Charles-Bonenfant bursary in 1999. He is about to start a ten-month training period at the Quebec National Assembly, and a Master's in Political Science.

Personality Awards - UndergraduatesImaginative and full of foresight, Miguel Da Costa Frias is planning his own business, EPD America, specializing in tasty and highly nutritious meals and dietary supplements for customers with special requirements due to illness or allergies. His 280-page business proposal has won several awards. In academe, Miguel has received a number of honourable mentions for his gifted speaking, his debate skills and his involvement in community work. His commitment to social causes emerged when he was just 13 years old, with the founding of the Mad Carollers Guild, which since that time has collected thousands of dollars for various charitable outfits in the Montreal area.
