Award recipients and finalists
In 1997 there were 1,300,000 illiterate people of all age groups in Québec. So a handful of students at the Université de Sherbrooke rolled up their sleeves and formed a literacy group. Working hand in hand with local organizations specializing in education, this group is in direct contact with people who have requested help with reading and writing. Since 1997, this literacy group's main activity has been to pair tutors with students. A literacy tutor meets a learner once or twice per week. 1999-2000 was the group's fourth year in operation and thirty more pairings are being planned.

AWARD RECIPIENTS
Communications, education and societyNothing promotes learning like having a big brother or a big sister. This is roughly the idea behind the Découverte project, which paired elementary school students with students from Montreal's École de technologie supérieure. Under the watchful eyes of future engineers, the younger students built an electric train, assembled worm composters, and operated robots. They also discovered electricity and electrical circuits, and learned the basics of the Internet, email, and word-processing. Paired activities like these are becoming more and more numerous. A similar project is now under way with students from St-Henri High School in Montréal. The theme for the Découverte project this year will be solar energy.

FINALIST
Communications, education and societyGeneviève Dupuis and Caroline Ouimet, both students in teaching at the UQAT, sure have done their homework. They are the creators of BORIS, a summer day-camp for youngsters in sixth grade and secondary 1 with learning problems. Twenty-four students joined the first BORIS camp in the summer of 1998. Every day they were called upon to solve a mathematical or scientific conundrum. Dealing with problems in realistic contexts, they learned to perform mathematical operations and to write up reports, and have fun at the same time. The BORIS project was a thorough success, and the founders have plans to introduce the concept to other places in their area.
