Committed to Making the Campus, as well as Downtown Montréal, Greener
For a long time now, the students at UQÀM have been taking repeated action to turn their campus into a paradigm of environmental respect. With their Verdis-Toit project, the students are working towards making the roofs on campus, which represent the equivalent of 11 football pitches, greener. For two years, a model green roof, where tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, melons, strawberries, herbs and flowers all have pride of place, has been flourishing and is so popular that the students are currently setting up a second similar garden.

Committed to Helping Students Bike to School
Thanks to the Centre de réparation et d’ajustement de bicyclettes de l’ÉTS (CRABE), for an annual fee of $20, the students and staff at ÉTS now have access to a workshop where they can share the tools, equipment and know-how required to keep their bikes in good working order. CRABE has also become a place to discuss, learn and raise awareness about alternative means of transportation and the environment, and is a wellspring of new ideas for promoting biking.

Committed to Reducing the Polytechnique’s Ecological Footprint
For five years now, Polysphère has been defending the environmental cause: an environment week, an awareness kiosk, a car-sharing bulletin board, self-serve bikes, and the list goes on. Recently, the group also distinguished itself by creating an immense multi-material recycling island, using a 240-litre recycling bin, for collecting glasses, ink cartridges, used computer equipment and so forth. Polysphère’s project is a tremendous success and has even aroused the interest of other universities.
