Committed to the On-Going Fight against Aids

From Vancouver to Montréal, with stops in Uganda and Kenya, Elizabeth Sully has already left her mark. Actively involved in various national and international organizations, the political science and international development student has taken up arms against Aids. She has played a definite leadership role in the McGill Global AIDS Coalition, worked in Kenya for a major Aids prevention organization and participated in a seminar on the face of Aids in Africa.

Committed to Promoting Human Rights

International relations and international law student Sophie D’Aoust strives to help improve the living conditions of children. Be it in Montréal, Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger or Senegal, her actions are always highly beneficial: she has helped raise funds to construct a well for farmers and to purchase the materials needed to make soap, taught street youth and organized Aids public awareness campaigns. She also helps autistic children at the Centre Quatre Poches in Montréal.

Committed to a World that is More Equitable Towards Women and Marginalized Groups

After spending a summer on a Native American reserve teaching children and more than a year in Seoul working with teenagers, law student Mae Jane Nam chose to devote her energies to defending the rights of marginalized groups and to the fight against discrimination. Aware that violence towards women is still a problem in Canada, Mae Jane founded the Philippine Women's Centre of Quebec (PWC-Q), for which she conducted an exhaustive study on the situation of Filipino-Canadian immigrants in Canada.

Committed to Bringing People Closer Together to Better Help and Cure

Francis Livernoche’s studies in social paediatrics bear witness to the fact that the cause of children is very close to his heart. His participation in a humanitarian project in Haiti where, with the help of colleagues, he set up a children’s holiday camp, is a fine example of his commitment and leadership skills. Aware of the impact medicine can have if it is governed by social and community concerns, the young man also gives of his time to the Assistance aux enfants en difficulté (AED) centre in the Hochelaga neighbourhood and has taken part in the Grands Amis program.

Committed to Boosting his Community by Helping Youth to Shine Forth

Dany Carpentier believes that arts and sports are the perfect means of encouraging young people to get involved and it was for this reason that he founded Jeunesse Hiphop Mauricie (JHM). He then went on to set up an urban festival, inviting as many young people as possible to get actively involved in the programming and logistics, and of course the performances. Thousands of young people between the ages of 12 and 25 have attended the event, which has been held three times. Recognized for his leadership skills, Dany is on the boards of directors for the Trois-Rivières 375th anniversary celebrations and the TRIPS du Rivage organization.

Committed to Healing Through Empathy, Human Contact and Humour

Michael Morin, who is simultaneously pursuing two bachelor’s degrees, one in physiotherapy and the other in biochemistry, believes in the importance of humour and human contact in health care. Adhering to the philosophy of Dr. Patch Adams, Michael set up Famille Phyling, a project that enables physiotherapy students to develop new techniques for reaching out to specific clienteles. Michael is also actively involved in the Signes d'espoir centre and hopes to establish a multidisciplinary clinic providing personalized care centred on the patient.

Committed to Having a Positive Influence on the Future of the Community

Administration student Mélanie Brisson possesses a natural ability to mobilize others and gets a sparkle in her eye when the time comes to assume a leadership role in a new project. She has long been involved with the Junior Optimist Clubs and rapidly climbed the ladder to become president of the organization’s international chapter. The young woman also helped establish the first European junior club in France, founded the first collegiate club in Québec, and is in charge of a public-speaking contest.

Committed to Fighting Social Inequalities by Promoting Education

Génie en herbe, the track and field team, the student newspaper, Jeunes Démocrates, theatre… Since high school, Régine Debrosse’s path has been punctuated by various types of social commitment. Over the years, the psychology student has also added the environment and the community to her list of different areas of involvement, giving of her time to Dix Mille Villages, which advocates fair trade and social integration, Équiterre and the McGill Urban Community Sustainment Project, a food and housing cooperative.
