Committed to breaking down the barriers of museology…

The first Québec university publication of its kind, the journal Muséologie, les cahiers d’Études supérieures, launched by a group of students and graduates in museology at the Université du Québec à Montréal and the Université de Montréal in 2006, is already a success that has crossed many borders. Thanks to high-calibre contributors, the new perspective it provides on museology and its polished layout, the journal gives the professional community in the field greater visibility and allows young researchers to diffuse their work. It immediately obtained the support of UQÀM’s Heritage Institute, is backed by the Société des musées québécois and was the recipient of the 2008 Grafika award in the category printed media. Moreover, Muséologie is now available at the Centre Pompidou and Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, the Musée Olympique in Lausanne and the Musée d’ethnographie in Geneva.

Committed to diffusing alternative culture

By opening the café-bistro Le Charlot, Simon Bellerose, Alexandre Gauthier and Thomas Richard, three students at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, wanted to offer up-and-coming artists somewhere to be seen and heard. Le Charlot has become a true meeting place bringing together artists in disciplines such as poetry, music, theatre, the visual arts and many other art forms and to date has hosted more than 200 cultural events of all kinds. Putting its space and equipment at the disposal of artists and community groups totally free of charge, Le Charlot also acts as an events promoter by organizing and financing regional events such as the Cercle de conteurs and Théâtre Spontané. Much more than a simple café-bristro, Le Charlot’s concept reflects today’s socially conscious young people, with their concern for the environment, sustainable development and human solidarity.

Committed to demystifying chamber music

As chamber music is little known to the general public, Claire Cavanagh, Éric Charbonneau and Sophie Cusson, three students from the faculty of music at the Université de Sherbrooke, became true ambassadors for demystifying this musical genre. To do so, the three students staged an innovative concert entitled Chroniques Étudiantes and their stunning performance was held at the Granada Theatre on April 1, 2009. In the form of a musical comedy combining different musical styles such as classical, jazz, Broadway and even Québec folk, the concert gave participating students the chance to showcase their many talents. The biggest project ever set up by the music school, Chroniques Étudiantes required the commitment of 40 students who had to oversee all production stages, from the musical direction to composition, writing, stage design, project management, sewing and promoting the event.
