Committed to helping improve people’s living environment, health and quality of life

By organizing the Charrette en urbanisme “Un air d’échangeur” project at the beginning of 2009, university students in related programs at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) wanted to offer the Québec transport ministry different planning options for the proposed reconstruction of the Turcot interchange in Montréal. Thanks to their talent, conscientiousness and commitment, the students brought to life a major event of outstanding scope. A bona fide 72-hour race against the clock during which teams of students work towards establishing their planning project, the event brought together students and professionals in the fields of architecture, urban planning, design, health and engineering who discussed and exchanged ideas relating to sustainable mobility. A total of 42 students from seven different universities spared no effort or ingenuity in their efforts to impress the 200 participants.

Committed to raising awareness of climate change among youth

Since fall 2006, some twenty biology, geography, psychosociology and education students have been helping carry out the various activities organized by the Comité d’action de l’UQUAR sur les changements climatiques (CADUCC), UQUAR’s committee on global warming. By inviting guest speakers, presenting environmental films, hosting information kiosks and distributing brochures, the students have succeeded in rallying the university community and the citizens of Rimouski to their cause. Since fall 2008, the organization has been touring elementary schools, offering children activities linked to climate change and tips and advice on how to help protect the environment on a daily basis. To date, they have visited a total of 22 schools and CADUCC has even been invited to present the activity at schools in the Montréal area, providing a wonderful opportunity to strengthen its impact.

Committed to reducing the waste of food in grocery stores

Every week, a group of students on McGill University’s Macdonald campus cook and serve meals prepared using donated food. Their objective: to raise awareness of hunger in the world, the amount of food wasted in our society and how food that is past its best-by date but still edible can be salvaged. By establishing partnerships with the on-campus farm and grocery stores, the Happy Belly members collect food that is too old to be sold but still fit for human consumption. The food is cooked the evening it is collected and is offered free of charge for lunch the following day on the campus. The students salvage more than 50 kg of food per week, which allows them to offer sixty or so meals. Their project has shown that it is possible to get involved and play an active part in reducing world hunger as well as raise numerous issues relating to the waste of food.
