Committed to helping adults experiencing difficulties rediscover the pleasure of learning

As part of her internship at the Mgr-Beaudoin adult education centre of the Beauce-Etchemin school board, Stéphanie Poulin, a special education and social adaptation student at the Université de Sherbrooke, developed a course aimed at providing students registered in the adult education program with tools to help them better deal with everyday life. Aimed at alleviating the problems regarding the French language experienced by students in terms of reading and public speaking, the new course was inspired by the principles behind the adult education reform and proved that it is possible to teach adults using methods other than modules. The pilot project, which brought together eight students between the ages of 20 and 52, used an approach based on self-expression activities (writing, painting on canvas, photography, music, cooking, dance and therapeutic horseback riding). The project was a triumphant success and showed that, by changing their approach, teachers can have a positive impact on their students.

Committed to promoting the French language among teachers

In August 2007, five students in the faculty of education at UQÀM set up the Dictée Éric-Fournier, an innovative project aimed at helping teachers improve their knowledge of the French language and acquire a taste for perfecting their writing skills. Named in honour of Éric Fournier, a friend who died accidentally in early 2007, the dictation has the added advantage of being on the Web (www.dictee.ca), and thus offers users the chance to work and improve in total privacy. The site publishes a new dictation every week accompanied by detailed answers and benefits from the right to reproduce the content of the Antidote software to ensure reliable, top quality answers. The project members also host a kind of annual competition, which last year attracted more than 140 participants.

Committed to building bridges between academic circles and society

From “science bars” and a high calibre colloquium to campaigns promoting scientific knowledge, a photography competition and training workshops favouring communication between young researchers, the activities carried out by La biologie dans tous ses États student association are outstanding and a credit to the Université du Québec à Rimouski. Established by a group of biology, chemistry and geography graduates, the project aims to promote university studies and research through scientific popularization activities. By bringing the sciences out of the confines of laboratories, the students strive to build bridges between academic circles and society. And the participation of 350 people at the 2009 colloquium bears witness to the strength of these bridges.
