As it is sometimes difficult to grasp the sheer magnitude of the different armed conflicts being fought in distant lands or to understand the upheavals caused to civilians, six master‘s students in international relations at the Université Laval decided to let people see what everyday life is like in a refugee camp and last April, for a period of three days, the Université Laval campus was the theatre of a unique experience. The Sur la piste des réfugiés project sought to heighten awareness among students and the general public of the harsh realities of refugee life. The programme included lectures, a play and testimonies, and reached out to more than 500 people, to say nothing of the thousands of others who were exposed to this massive event. Greatly contributing to cultivating a sense of mutual aid on campus and to promoting graduate studies in international relations, the event also led to the creation of the Droit et démocratie de l’Université Laval delegation which now has some thirty members. Furthermore, the project has caught the attention of three other Canadian universities and was so successful that it will be presented again next year.
