Award recipients and finalists
Created in January 2002 by students from various disciplines at the École des hautes études commerciales de Montréal with the aim of promoting art and culture among the establishment’s student community, Expression’s main calling is that of a platform between artists and students. Offering a theatre workshop in preparation for the presentation of a play, salsa and rock lessons, various exhibitions and the services of a ticket office offering discounts on shows presented in Montréal, the association has also produced its own talent contest: Ovation. Presented last March at the Just for Laughs Studio, the show brought together, on one stage, singers, dancers, acrobats and musicians, all of whom were students at HEC Montréal. Yet, the greatest achievement of Expression, and the one hundred or so volunteers involved, is undeniably the production of the musical comedy The Scarlet Pimpernel, a work first presented on Broadway in 1997. Premiering worldwide in its French version from April 3 to 10 of last year before an audience of over 3,000, this adaptation by the Expression troupe required the collaboration of 30 singers and 25 musicians from various disciplines and distinguished itself as being the largest non-professional production ever to be presented in Montreal.

Arts, literature and cultureAs a springboard for new artists, the Événement Interuniversitaire de Création Vidéo, whose mandate is to bring together artists from different disciplines and trends in the field of video, is an ideal opportunity for budding video directors to present the fruits of their work to an inquisitive and attentive public. Established in 1990 by a group of students at the Université du Québec à Montréal, the organization can now also count on the participation of students from Concordia University and the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. The 2004 edition, which was presented in a professional yet festive atmosphere during three consecutive evenings in February, took place in the heart of the Fonderie Darling in Montréal. The 2004 version presented 30 single-band videos, selected from the 75 submitted, produced by students from the Université du Québec à Montréal, Concordia University, the Université de Montréal and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. It succeeded in attracting a record audience of nearly 1,000 people thus proving the organization’s commitment and rigour. As a follow-up to the event, a provincial tour of the winning videos was undertaken during the summer.

Arts, literature and cultureDrawing its inspiration from the desire of young university students to find an original idea for financing the coordination of international training courses with the Enfants d’ici ou d’ailleurs organization, the Festival MultiArt is now at its fourth edition. Having inevitably evolved into an urban artistic event, organized by and for young people from the Island of Montréal, the Festival MultiArt has distinguished itself as a major event where young artists from all disciplines join forces with the goal of exhibiting their work, talent and innovation. Taking place over two days during the month of March of this year in an underprivileged Montréal neighbourhood where cultural events are somewhat rare, the 2004 edition brought together almost 120 artists who in turn attracted over a thousand young people between the ages of 20 and 30, both students and young professionals, Francophones and Anglophones, neophytes and experienced artists. The Festival, with an organizing committee made up exclusively of university students, enabled visitors to witness, through theatrical arts, dance, video, photography, painting and more, the new, nonconformist, multidisciplinary artistic culture.
