Launched in 1997 by a group of students from the Université de Sherbrooke with the goal of enabling their colleagues in Finance to better adapt to the new realities of a constantly fluctuating domain, in September 2001 the Fonds Équinox performed its first stock market simulation in history. Succeeding beyond expectations, the event brought together over 130 participants from eight Quebec, Ontario and Western Canada universities. Enthusiastically simulating the most realistic stock market floor ever to exist in Quebec, the participants were stirred by the rhythms of high finance even treating themselves to a major crash at the end of the day. In fact, the enthusiasm aroused by this activity paved the way for other similar projects such as Indice Québec in which the participants must follow the evolution of companies for which they are responsible in order to modify the composition of the index. In concrete terms, the Fonds Équinox, the assets of which total over $65,000, substantially contributes to training the Quebec financial professionals of tomorrow, a fact demonstrated by its five individual victories and three team victories during the last seven simulations.

To broadcast, in a language understood by everyone, the results of research in urbanization was the dream cherished by Pascal Lavoie and Charles de la Chevrotière, two students in the Urban Planning Department at the Université de Montréal. In fact, the crying need for a broadcast medium was truly felt at the end of the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Students in Urban Planning held at the University of British Columbia in the spring of 2000. In noting the lack of an efficient means of transmitting information, Mr. Lavoie and Mr. de la Chevrotière joined forces to offer those with a passion for urban planning a reference tool in their plans to heighten public awareness and to educate the population. In launching the U21 magazine, the first number of which was published in October 2001 and touched on such subjects as the insecurity of the housing market and the partnership between the private and public sectors for financing affordable housing, these two partners saw their dreams materialize while at the same time enabling students, teachers and professionals to share their concerns about urban and environmental issues.

Heightening awareness, uniting, encouraging, supporting and bringing closer together in the aim of enabling enterprising students to better integrate the business world are all goals that the Regroupement des Étudiants Entrepreneurs de l'Université Laval (RÉEL) set for itself when establishing the Alliance project that is the achievement of 23 Business Administration students from the Université Laval. As a tool for heightening awareness, uniting and encouraging business students, RÉEL also promotes networking activities between the student population and the business community of metropolitan Quebec. Within this context of collaboration, the Alliance project has supported Unibroue and Formule SAE, two recent enterprises in the region. First organization to develop a project giving young entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet with student collaborators, the RÉEL also appeals to students who are aware of the importance of developing a network of contacts and it welcomes all student associations from all departments who wish to adhere to the movement.
